Wonka is a 2023 musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby. It tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, a character in the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, featuring his early days as a chocolatier.
The film stars Timothée Chalamet as the title character with an ensemble cast which includes Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Rich Fulcher, Rakhee Thakrar, Natasha Rothwell, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant.
It is the third live-action film based on Dahl’s novel, following Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).
Reviews
Wonka is a sweet and satisfying film that celebrates the magic and joy of chocolate and imagination. It is a film that honours the legacy of Roald Dahl and Willy Wonka, but also adds its own flavour and flair and delivers on its promise of fun, fantasy, and chocolate.
I really enjoyed this movie. I wasn’t expecting it to be good because I couldn’t see Timothée Chalamet as WONKA but he did well and this adaptation was fun to watch. It had many funny moments and the ending was so sweet.
