Sue Bown’s large-scale energetic abstract work explores shape, colour and movement.
Noticing detail in the world around her has been part of Sue’s essence for as long as she can remember. Originally from Surrey, Sue moved to Devon where she found the coastal energy sparked her creativity and inspired her to paint.
Two years ago she left Devon for Cirencester. Now living in the Cotswolds, she is aware of how the local colours and energy are asking questions in her practice; hence the reference to place in the title of this exhibition.
Sue has exhibited work nationally and internationally. She has exhibited work in commercial galleries in the South West and in the South West Academy. Collaboration has also been a strong component in her practice: she has contributed to a many creative community projects focused on the themes of connection and breaking boundaries.
Sue Bown
Sue Bown is a painter and printmaker whose practice is an embodied enquiry into movement, space and energy. She does this using colour relationships, geometrical shapes and gestural mark making.

Colour, scale and materiality are important to her as is the physicality of moving paint on a surface. Every painting reflects her world, a ‘self-portrait’ of experience, life and energy.
In 2022 Sue graduated from Arts University Plymouth with a first-class honours degree in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking. There she was awarded the Pro Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.
Dr. Stephen Felmingham, Pro Vice Chancellor at Arts University Plymouth said of her work:
“Sue’s paintings demonstrate a profound understanding of material, colour and form, which she employs in a series of mature and confident works. These are outstanding paintings that resonate deeply with the viewer and are a testament to the immense hard work she has put into her practice during the course.”
Some of this work will be shown in the Space and Place exhibition.
