Our second concert by the OSJ celebrates its long-standing musical partnership with the extraordinary pianist Derek Paravicini.
Blind, autistic and having severe learning difficulties, Derek is widely regarded as one of the world’s most remarkable musical talents.
Equally at home in classical music, jazz and improvisation, his astonishing musical memory and instinctive artistry have captivated audiences around the globe.
Derek joins the orchestra in Arensky’s Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, Jeremy Lubbock’s Moods — written especially for Derek — Astor Piazzolla’s hauntingly beautiful Oblivion, and concluding with Tchaikovsky’s glorious Serenade for Strings.
Along the way, Derek will invite the audience into his extraordinary musical world: taking requests, transforming familiar tunes and recreating music after hearing it just once. It is a joyful, uplifting experience that has to be seen to be believed.
