Adapted for the screen from Bea Roberts’ multi-award-winning stage play, And Then Come the Nightjars tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a Devon farmer and the vet who is assigned to cull his precious herd.
It’s 2001 and in a barn on a south Devon farm Michael and local vet Jeffrey are awaiting the birth of a cow to join a herd. Michael recently lost his beloved wife, Sheila, and Jeffrey is clearly in the process of losing his wife, not least because of his growing drink problem.
There’s another cloud: foot and mouth has a hold in the area.

Films showing the dirt under the fingernails of rural British life are rare, which is maybe why this feels very natural, honest and almost shorn of unnecessary, extraneous characters that could hinder or come between the pair.
Although it can’t escape the pure stage-y-ness of the setup, with two great central performances, And Then Come The Nightjars is thoroughly nice. In this day and age, that’s a rare treat.
